I am a native of North Carolina and came to Hawkeye Community College in 1994. I taught at two community colleges in North Carolina before coming to Hawkeye. Before that I was a journalist (sportswriter) and won a South Carolina Press Association Award for Feature Writing in 1982. I also have a background in college athletics sports information and promotions and even worked as a publicity director for a professional boxer. In the past, mostly in the 1990s, I read academic papers and research projects at conferences in Lafayette, Louisiana; Atlanta, Georgia; Louisville, Kentucky; Jackson, Mississippi; Terre Haute, Indiana; and York, England. Subjects in my research experience included topics on Jack the Ripper, Robert Coover, films by John Huston, baseball, Shakespeare, and Percy Shelley. I have some TESOL experience in the UK and have headed statewide committees regarding college transfer issues while in North Carolina. In my years at Hawkeye, I have served nearly six years combined as chair of the communications department. Students can usually get me off the subject in my classes by getting me to talk about baseball or The Beatles (my all-time favorite music group)!
