Dental Hygiene Admission Requirements
Be a high school graduate or equivalent.
Apply at Hawkeye.
Meet basic skill competencies in reading, writing, and math.
Basic skill competencies assessment provides information about your academic skills in reading, writing, and math. This information will be used to determine your acceptance, course selection, and registration.
For admission into the Dental Hygiene program, you must score at least the following sub scores on the ACT or the COMPASS assessment:

Complete all of the following college success courses with a "C" grade or higher at Hawkeye Community College or comparable courses at another accredited college:
- ENG061 College Preparatory Writing II
- MAT063 Elementary Algebra
- RDG040 College Preparatory Reading III
For full acceptance into the Dental Hygiene program, you must successfully complete program prerequisites with a grade of "C" or higher. Applicants must have at least a 2.75 cumulative GPA (on a 4 point scale) with the six program prerequisites.
Additional Requirements Before You Start the Program
A personal interview or program orientation session and job shadow experience may be required.
You must be Health Care Provider level CPR certified and have a physical exam with immunization record on Hawkeye Community College form, prior to the first day of classes.
We strongly advise you to complete all of the general education courses within the program sequence of study prior to full admission into the program. These courses are marked with an asterisk (*).
Admissions applicant files are processed in March of each year for the following Fall Semester class provided the applicant is of senior high school status or older.
Send your transcripts and test scores to the Admissions office.
- Completed applicant files (we have your application, transcripts, and test scores) will be processed as follows:
Applicants who do not meet the program's admission requirements will be inactivated and will be sent an Admissions Inactivation Letter.
Applicants enrolled in coursework to complete the basic skill competencies admission requirements will become candidates for admission upon completion and will be advised by Student Services.
Applicants who have successfully completed the admissions requirements and the program prerequisites will be advised by the Retention Specialist for the School of Health Sciences.
Upon completion of the program prerequisites and a cumulative GPA of 2.75 within these courses, applicants will be placed on the Eligible for Acceptance list. Placement on the list is determined by their admission requirement completion date.
Applications are processed for admission in March of each year for the following fall class provided the applicant is of senior high school status or older.
We accept approximately 22 students each Fall Semester. Applicants will be accepted based on the date their applicant file was completed. If many students share the same date for completing their applicant file, the date you submitted your application, if needed, will be used to prioritize acceptance.
If you are offered acceptance to begin the Dental Hygiene program and you choose to decline your acceptance, your file will be inactivated and you will need to re-apply for the admission to the program when interested.
