CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) - Community members got a glimpse into an area educational program that is helping lead its students into prosperous careers.

Project Lead the Way has been a part of the curriculum at Cedar Falls High School and junior highs for the past four years. Through various applied math and science courses, students are exposed to the software and gadgets that are utilized in the engineering world.

Those involved with the program demonstrated its state of the art equipment, including a 3D printer.

Hawkeye Community College and the University of Northern Iowa, as well as area companies like Viking Pump and John Deere, partner with the project too. Students can earn college credit for some pre-engineering courses and are provided job shadowing and internship opportunities.

Project Lead the Way has received national recognition from the Society of Manufacturing Engineers Education Foundation. Last year, one entry level student even earned a provisional patent on a tail light design he put together in his pre-engineering class.

Over 140 students are currently taking advantage of this special opportunity.
