WATERLOO—Hawkeye Community College has a new vice president of academic affairs, at least temporarily.
Steve Berrien will fill the position on an interim basis beginning Monday as the college embarks on a search for a permanent replacement.

Berrien, of Dennis, Mass., has served in a number of capacities at community colleges including vice president of academic affairs, vice chancellor for academic and student affairs, dean of academic affairs and dean of arts and science. His educational background includes doctorate and master's degrees in comparative literature from Harvard University and a bachelor's degree from Haverford College in Pennsylvania. He will be paid a monthly salary of $11,166.67.

Berrien is being supplied to Hawkeye through the Massachusetts-based Registry for College and University Presidents, which contracts with more than 400 retired postsecondary senior administrators around the country.

The position has been vacant since Sam Dosumu's resignation Sept. 21, just over a year after he started the job. Prior to arriving at Hawkeye, Dosumu was vice president of instructional services at Asheville Buncombe (N.C.) Technical Community College.
