WATERLOO—Hawkeye Community College is the first educational institution in the Cedar Valley to earn the Blue Zones Worksite designation. The Blue Zones project is designed to inspire, encourage, and promote actions and lifestyles to create a healthier work environment and community.

Hawkeye earned the Blue Zones designation by achieving more than the necessary points required for employers. Points are earned through a variety of initiatives such as offering healthy choices in the cafeteria, providing exercise and weight loss programs, offering healthy items in the vending machines, providing stress reduction information, and much more.

“We are excited to be one of the first employers in the community to earn the Blue Zones designation, said Dr. Linda Allen, president of Hawkeye Community College. “This designation demonstrates our commitment to our employees’ well-being and to a healthier community.

After the beginning of the year, Hawkeye will continue to promote healthy lifestyles among employees as well as reach out to students to adapt healthier lifestyles. Hawkeye has more than 5,900 students taking classes on the main campus, at one of their centers, or at a satellite location.

Earlier this year, Hawkeye Community College was recognized as one of the Top 20 Employers of Choice in the Cedar Valley.
