WATERLOO–Hawkeye Community College instructor Katie Gisleson, RDH, MHEA, has been named the 2017 Registered Dental Hygienist of the Year by the Iowa Dental Hygienists’ Association.

The award honors an association member who advanced the art and science of dental hygiene, maintained and promoted the highest standards of dental hygiene and practice, improved the professional image of the dental hygienist, and made meaningful contributions to the Iowa Dental Hygienists’ Association.

“Katie teaches ethics, and personifies the image of an ethical and moral dental hygienist in private practice and education,” said Emily Boge, dental administrative chair at Hawkeye and president of the Iowa Dental Hygienists’ Association. “Katie is compassionate to students, maintains fair policies, and assists the students in having fun while learning.”

Nominees must be licensed and have practiced dental hygiene in the state of Iowa. Names are removed from nominations before review, so the awards are selected solely based on merit.

Gisleson earned her Associate of Applied Science in Dental Hygiene from Hawkeye in 2007. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Human Resource Management from the University of Northern Iowa and a Master of Higher Education Administration from Upper Iowa University.  She has taught at Hawkeye since 2013. She also practices dental hygiene during the summer at Dental Associates of Manchester.

The award will be presented at the Iowa Dental Hygienists’ Association Annual Session held May 5, 2017, in Cedar Rapids.
