Tickets Available for the Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Banquet

WATERLOO—Tickets are available for the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Banquet, which will be held on Sunday, January 15, at the Electric Park Ballroom, 310 West Conger Street, Waterloo. The event is hosted by Hawkeye Community College and the African American Heritage League. The theme for the banquet is “It’s more than a dream,” with keynote address by Cassandra Hart.

A native of Waterloo, Mrs. Hart is a graduate of Columbus High School, Hawkeye Community College, and the University of Northern Iowa. She has a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a master’s degree in K-12 educational principalship. She taught second grade for 12 years and is currently lead teacher at Lowell Elementary School in the Waterloo Community School District. She works as part of the school’s leadership team to build leaders and a strong foundation for students, families, and colleagues. Her dedication and passion is evident in her relationships with students and families. She advocates for their success and empowers them to achieve their goals.

Mrs. Hart was recipient of the R.J. McElroy Trust Gold Star Award for Outstanding Teaching and Multicultural Educator of Excellence Award in 2007, and “A Phenomenal Woman” award from the Martin Luther King Jr. Center of Hawkeye Community College in 2008. She is married to Hon. Quentin Hart, Sr., mayor of Waterloo, and they have three children. She is devoted to her profession, her faith, her family, and her community.

The cost to attend the banquet is $40 per person. Students 18 and under can purchase tickets for $20. Social hour begins at 5:00 p.m. with dinner served at 5:30 p.m. Proceeds benefit student scholarships and the African American Heritage League.
