WATERLOO–Essays by two Hawkeye Community College students have been selected for publication in the September issue of The Change Agent, an adult education magazine for social justice.

Christophe Shabani Kumbelu and Guadalupe Silva Vizcaino, both English Language Leaners, wrote essays on the topic of celebrations. Kumbelu, a native of the Democratic Republic of Congo, wrote about New Year’s Day events in his country. Vizcaino wrote about her Mexican heritage and how it has been infused into American Thanksgiving activities with her family. The students each receive a $50 award in addition to having their essays published in the magazine.

Kumbelu has completed his English Language Learner courses at Metro Center and is now enrolled on main campus. He plans to transfer to the University of Northern Iowa to study finance. Vizcaino is studying English at Metro Center to help her better communicate with her granddaughter, Sofia. She plans to eventually teach Sofia Spanish.
