Sherman Wise is regional sales manager for Premier Staffing, Inc. Growing up the oldest of five children in a single parent household, he learned from an early age what it meant to be a leader. He had an entrepreneurial mindset, selling candy to fourth grade classmates. An honor roll student, Wise had a bright future, but a series of bad decisions led to him dropping out. At 19 he began working to support his daughter, entering a cycle of dead-end jobs and continued trouble. Determined to break the cycle, he came to Hawkeye to complete his high school diploma and give his daughter a better life. It was one of the wisest decisions he ever made.
Wise earned a bachelor’s degree in public relations and a dual master’s degree in public relations and marketing from the University of Northern Iowa, where he received full-ride academic scholarships to complete both degrees. The proud father of four, he taught oral communications at UNI and was marketing director for the Blue Zones Project. He consulted with the Oregon governor’s office with its healthiest state initiative and in January Gov. Terry Branstad selected him to keynote the Martin Luther King Jr. Day ceremony in Des Moines.
Wise is president of Shaping Leaders of Tomorrow, a non-profit group empowering the community through education and job opportunities. He serves on the Waterloo Tourism and Visitors Bureau board and recently launched Longevity Inspires Designs, a clothing line motivating people to think long-term about health, wellness, and financial well-being. In 2014, he was recognized as one of the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier’s 20 Under 40.
Mallory Owens has always led an active life. Growing up in Traer, she was active in church and community. She participated in band, chorus, volleyball, golf, swing show, student council, and yearbook at North Tama County High School, and was a member of Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) and Brothers and Sisters in Christ (BASIC).
It was her experience working on her high school yearbook that spurred Owens to pursue a degree in graphic communications. While at Hawkeye, Owens was active in student life, serving as president of Student Leadership Council and a member of the Student Ambassadors. She is a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and is graduating with an Associate of Applied Arts in Graphic Communications.
