Motorcycle: Basic Rider Course

Date: 9/13/2013
Time: 5:00pm-10:00pm
Location: Regional Transportation Training Center 109

Class Description: To meet the challenge of motorcycling you will need skills and knowledge. This course is designed to meet your needs if you are a beginner or intermediate rider. Rider Coaches will facilitate your development with 5 hours of interactive classroom activities and 10 hours of on-cycle instruction. In this course you will practice and develop the four fundamental riding skills: straight-line riding, turning, shifting, and stopping. You will then expand your skills into street-riding skills: advanced turning techniques, maximum braking techniques, and swerving. Finally, you will learn and practice the mental skills needed to develop street-riding strategies and the ability to deal with special situations. Motorcycles are provided for use during the course. Bring full-finger gloves, long sleeved shirt or jacket, long pants, and sturdy over-the-ankle footwear. Helmets and eye protection must be worn and will be provided if you do not provide your own. You will not be allowed to ride without this equipment. You must be at least 15 years old and have a valid driver's license or valid driver's permit and verification of driver's education class. This course is required by Iowa law to obtain a motorcycle operator's license for all residents under the age of 18. If you are under 18 years of age you must have written consent from your parent or guardian at the first class meeting. This course does have a written test and a riding skills test. Successful completion of BOTH tests is required to receive a DOT certificate of completion.
