Military and Veterans Services
The Military and Veterans Services office is dedicated to assisting students wishing to obtain VA education benefits under the Montgomery GI Bill benefit programs and Federal and State Tuition Assistance programs for Guard and Reservist. We appreciate the service and sacrifice of our veterans and their families and thus we strive to create a welcoming and supportive community at Hawkeye Community College. We are proud to serve you and will work diligently to ensure your academic success at Hawkeye Community College. We understand that there are challenges during the transition from soldier to student. We take great honor in supporting you through these changes and look forward to helping you realize your dreams and aspirations.
Army Tuition Assistance Program ReinstatedThe GoArmyEd's Tuition Assistance (TA) program was turned back on Wednesday 10 April 2013 at 0001 hours EDT. Soldiers are again able to apply for Tuition Assistance for the remainder of FY13 under the rules that governed TA usage prior to the suspension. The only limitation to TA usage will be that no enrollments with start dates between 8 March and 9 April are authorized. Enrollments with false start dates will be rejected by HQ ACES and if they appear on a school's invoice, the invoice will be rejected. As the TA program restarts we ask that you encourage Soldiers to utilize the academic testing program, CLEP and DSST exams, in fulfilling degree requirements. Remind them to utilize all available resources to prepare for the exams as free retests are no longer authorized. The Army is committed to education and understands the tremendous benefit that it provides to our Soldiers and is dedicated to maintaining a stable and supportable TA program. Troops to TeachersTroops to Teachers is a U.S. Department of Defense program that helps eligible military personnel begin a new career as teachers in public schools where their skills, knowledge, and experience are most needed. Request for Interviews with OEF/OIF Veterans and their FamiliesThe Sullivan Brothers Iowa Veterans Museum collects, preserves, and interprets the stories and artifacts of Iowa veterans who have served the nation from the Civil War to present. The museum, part of the Grout Museum District, is located in Waterloo, Iowa. The Sullivan Brothers Iowa Veterans Museum Oral History Project is currently conducting veteran and home front worker interviews for exhibit development, educational programming, productions, and archival preservation and is currently emphasizing on the stories of veterans who have served during the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts. If you, or someone you know, would like to be interviewed, you can contact Bob Neymeyer at bob.neymeyer@gmdistrict.org or call the museum at 319-234-6357. Interviews are videotaped and normally take no more than 90 minutes to complete. They can be done at the museum, at the home of the veteran, or a local community site like a library. Interviewers for the project travel throughout the state to conduct interviews. The veteran receives a complimentary presentation DVD of the interview. To date, over 1,400 interviews have been collected from individuals from World War II to the present conflict in the Middle East. We have interviews from veterans from 70 Iowa counties. While we invite OEF/OIF veterans and their families to contact us about doing an interview about their service, we will continue to interview veterans from earlier periods. |
