Master Promissory Note (MPN)

If you intend to borrow a Federal Direct Stafford Loan while attending Hawkeye, you will need to complete an Entrance Loan Counseling session and a Master Promissory Note (MPN).

Completing both the Entrance Loan Counseling Session and the Master Promissory Note (MPN) is mandatory for all students planning to take out a Federal Direct Stafford Loan per Federal regulations.

You do not have to complete these requirements if you are only accepting Federal Grant aid.

The Master Promissory Note (MPN) is a legal document in which you promise to repay your loan(s) and any accrued interest and fees to the U.S. Department of Education. It also explains the terms and conditions of your loan(s). Unless your school does not allow more than one loan to be made under the same Master Promissory Note, you can borrow additional Federal Direct Stafford Loans on a single Master Promissory Note for up to 10 years.

Parent PLUS Loan borrowers must also complete a Master Promissory Note.

Completing Your Master Promissory Note

You must complete your Master Promissory Note before the first disbursement of your Federal Loans.

List Hawkeye Community College as the school name.

To complete your Master Promissory Note you will need:

  • approximately 30 minutes. The Master Promissory Note must be completed in a single session so be sure you allow enough time to complete.

  • your Federal Student Aid PIN.

  • personal information such as your permanent and mailing address, phone number, email address, and alien registration number if you are an eligible non-citizen.

  • employer information including your employer name and address.

  • reference information for two people with different U.S. addresses who have known you for at least three years.

Student borrowers: The first reference should be a parent or legal guardian.

Parent PLUS Loan borrowers: You may not list the student for whom you are borrowing this loan as a reference.

You will need the name, address, phone number, and your relationship to the reference for each person you list as a reference.

References are not co-signers of your Federal Direct Stafford Loans.

  • Parent PLUS Loan borrowers will also need the following information about the student for whom the loan is being taken out:

    • student's first name, middle initial, and last name
    • student's social security number
    • student's date of birth
    • student's address
    • student's phone number
