Master Promissory Note (MPN)

If you intend to borrow a Federal Stafford Loan while attending Hawkeye, you will need to complete each of the following:

  1. an Entrance Loan Counseling session,
  2. a Master Promissory Note (MPN), and
  3. a Student Loan Game Plan.

You do not have to complete these requirements if you do not plan to borrow a federal loan.

The Master Promissory Note (MPN) is a legal document in which you promise to repay your loan(s) and any accrued interest and fees to the U.S. Department of Education. It also explains the terms and conditions of your loan(s). Unless your school does not allow more than one loan to be made under the same Master Promissory Note, you can borrow additional Federal Stafford Loans on a single Master Promissory Note for up to 10 years.

Parent PLUS Loan borrowers must complete a separate Master Promissory Note.

If you have previously completed the Master Promissory Note at another school, you are still required to complete the Master Promissory Note for Hawkeye Community College.

Completing Your Master Promissory Note

You must complete your Master Promissory Note before the first disbursement of your Federal Loans.

List Hawkeye Community College as the school name.

To complete your Master Promissory Note you will need:

  • approximately 30 minutes. The Master Promissory Note must be completed in a single session so be sure you allow enough time to complete.

  • your Federal Student Aid PIN.

  • personal information such as your permanent and mailing address, phone number, email address, and alien registration number if you are an eligible non-citizen.

  • employer information including your employer name and address.

  • reference information for two people with different U.S. addresses who have known you for at least three years.

Student borrowers: The first reference should be a parent or legal guardian.

Parent PLUS Loan Borrowers: You may not list the student for whom you are borrowing this loan as a reference.

You will need the name, address, phone number, and your relationship to the reference for each person you list as a reference.

References are not co-signers of your Federal Stafford Loans.

  • Parent PLUS Loan borrowers will also need the following information about the student for whom the loan is being taken out:

    • student's first name, middle initial, and last name
    • student's social security number
    • student's date of birth
    • student's address
    • student's phone number
