Meet Head Coach—Dave Westley

Dave Westley has worked at Hawkeye for over 30 years and is currently working part-time with the Dean of Business doing program development, including the new Golf Course and Country Club Management program which started this past fall.

Last spring Westley was asked to coach the Hawkeye Golf Club, and as an avid golfer who has been playing since high school, he quickly agreed. He says, "I am strictly an amateur golfer, but I enjoy the game and the comradery. To me one should always play to win, but have fun in the process. When one loses sight of the enjoyment of the game it no longer provides the rewards that we want to achieve." Westley does not see himself as a coach who will teach technique, he will leave that to our pro. "I see my role as providing support for the team and each team member."

A few of Westley's favorite quotes:

  • "Forget your opponents; always play against par."—Sam Snead

  • "Mistakes are part of the game. It’s how well you recover from them, that’s the mark of a great player."—Alice Cooper

  • "One of the most fascinating things about golf is how it reflects the cycle of life. No matter what you shoot — the next day you have to go back to the first tee and begin all over again and make yourself into something."—Peter Jacobsen
