This banquet honors the works of Martin Luther King Jr. and recognizes young adults who are essay and award winners. Dr. Beverly A. Smith is the Associate Superintendent for Human Resources and Equity for the Waterloo Community School District. She was born and raised in Waterloo, Iowa, and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in theatre and elementary education from Cornell College and a Master of Arts degree in Educational Psychology from the University of Northern Iowa. She was the first African-American woman to earn a Doctorate in educational leadership from the University of Northern, Iowa. She held numerous professional positions including elementary teacher, director of two child development agencies, elementary principal, and adjunct professor in the education departments of both Wartburg College and the University of Northern Iowa. Active in many civic and professional organizations, Dr. Smith currently serves on the Allen Hospital Board, Allen College Board, and the Black Hawk Gaming Commission. In addition, she serves as Chair of the State of Iowa Board of Educational Examiners. Past involvements include appointments to the Iowa State Board of Regents, the Governor’s Education Roundtable, and the Governor’s Task Force Closing the Achievement Gap for African-American Males. Numerous awards were bestowed to Dr. Smith. She is a recipient of the Salute Award from the Northeast Iowa Chapter of Women in Communications, Inc., KBBG Citizen of the Year and Community Service awards, Distinguished Emeritus of the University of Northern Iowa Price Laboratory School, Multicultural Educator Award, the Human Rights Commission Educator Award and the Martin Luther King Jr. Center Community Service Award. Dr. Smith served on the boards of Cedar Valley United Way, Family and Children’s Council of Black Hawk County, Black Hawk Leadership, Child Health Specialty Clinics, Hawkeye Community College Foundation, Waterloo Park Commission, Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Center, Afro-American Community Broadcasting, and Lily Furgerson Child Development Center. Along with serving on boards in numerous organizations, Dr. Smith was a member of the Waterloo Women’s Civic Club, the NAACP and past president of Tau Zeta Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. She worships at Payne African Methodist Episcopal Church. She is married to James “Fugie” Smith. They recently celebrated their 37th wedding anniversary.
