Van Gerpen Patient Simulation Center

Revolutionizing Healthcare Training

The Van Gerpen Patient Simulator Center gives students and healthcare workers a chance to train using advanced technology.

This high-tech center looks and feels like a real hospital, with settings like emergency rooms, ICUs, labor and delivery rooms, and exam rooms. Students in Hawkeye's Health programs use the center for hands-on training, practicing patient care from start to finish. They can make mistakes and learn from them in a safe environment, something they can’t do with real patients.

The center uses real hospital equipment, like oxygen systems, IV pumps, ventilators, defibrillators, and EKG machines. Students also train with electronic medical records and the Pyxis medication system, just like they’ll use on the job. When they graduate, they’re ready to step into their careers with confidence.

Tackling Real-World Scenarios

The Patient Simulator Lab features realistic, full-body manikins that represent all stages of life, from birth to adulthood, to prepare students for careers in healthcare.

Hawkeye has over 18 simulators with advanced features like blinking, sweating, crying, and responding to medications. Controlled by instructors using software with 250+ scenarios, these simulators show vital signs and symptoms. Students can interact with the "patients" through microphones and speakers, practicing communication and assessment skills in lifelike situations.

Training through simulation helps prepare students to enter the healthcare field with skill and confidence.
