Tips for Submitting College Applications

Navigating the College Application Process

This guide should help you stay on track during the application process. Take your time, plan ahead, and remember to show the admissions team why you're a great fit for their school!

Start Early and Submit Everything on Time

Don’t wait until the last minute. Gathering all the materials you need for your application might take longer than you expect.

A complete application usually includes:

  • Application form
  • Application fee
  • Official high school transcript
  • Official transcripts from any colleges you’ve attended

Make sure to request your transcripts early. If you’re still taking classes, you might need to send your final grades later.

Applications are usually reviewed in the order they’re received, so submit yours as early as possible.

Apply to Several Schools

Don’t just pick one school. Apply to at least three or four to keep your options open in case your top choice doesn’t work out.

Watch Deadlines

Keep track of all deadlines, including those for admissions, financial aid, and housing. Missing a deadline can limit your choices.

Read the Application Carefully

Before you start filling out an application, read through everything. Note what materials are required and make a plan to gather them all. Set up a timeline for when you’ll complete each part.

Fill In Every Section

If something doesn’t apply to you, write “N/A” (Not Applicable). Don’t leave anything blank or make the admissions team guess.

Write a Great Personal Statement

If your application asks for a personal statement or essay, this is your chance to stand out. Highlight what makes you unique, but be honest and specific. If you have unusual circumstances (like challenges that affected your grades), this is where you can explain them.

Proofread Everything

Before you submit your application, read through it carefully to catch any mistakes. Then, ask someone else (a teacher, counselor, or family member) to review it too. Everything should be error-free.

Check if You Need the ACT

Some schools require the ACT, especially if you haven’t taken it before. Make sure to find out if you need to take it and schedule your test early enough to meet application deadlines. You can take the ACT at Hawkeye.

Apply for Financial Aid Early

Apply for financial aid at the same time you apply for admissions. Even if it’s for a backup school, it’s good to have options. Be sure to send your FAFSA results to every school you're applying to.

Choose Recommendations Wisely

Only ask for recommendations from people who can write excellent ones for you. It’s okay to ask them if they feel comfortable writing a strong recommendation. Give them plenty of time, at least a month, to write it.

Request Course Descriptions for Transfer Credits

If you’re transferring, you’ll need course descriptions for the classes you took. You can find these online for Hawkeye courses. For other schools, contact their Admissions or Student Records office.
