Master Promissory Note (MPN)

A Legal Promise to Repay Your Loans

The Master Promissory Note (MPN) is a legal document where you agree to repay your loan and any interest and fees to the U.S. Department of Education. It also explains the terms of your loan.

Parents taking out a Parent PLUS Loan need to fill out a separate Master Promissory Note.

Even if you’ve completed an Master Promissory Note at another school, you still need to complete one for Hawkeye Community College.

You must complete your Master Promissory Note before you can receive your first Federal Loan disbursement.

Completing Your Master Promisory Note

You’ll need to complete the Master Promissory Note (MPN) in a single session, which takes about 30 minutes. Be sure to list Hawkeye Community College as your school.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Your FSA ID to log in.
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader (version 4.0 or higher).
  • Personal information: your mailing addresses (permanent and current if different), phone, email, and alien registration number (if applicable).
  • Employer information: name and address.
  • References: name, address, phone, and relationship to you of two people with different U.S. addresses who’ve known you for 3+ years. For student borrowers, one reference should be a parent or legal guardian. References on your Master Promissory Note are provided as reliable contacts who can help verify or update your personal information if your loan servicer cannot reach you. They are not financially responsible for your loan and are not co-signers. Including accurate references ensures effective communication regarding your loan.

Parent PLUS Loan Borrowers

The parent who applied for the loan must complete the Master Promissory Note using their (the parent) FSA ID.

In addition to the information listed above, Parent PLUS Loan borrowers must also provide specific information about the student for whom the loan is being taken out. This includes the student’s full name, Social Security number, date of birth, address, and phone number.

Completion Confirmation

You'll know your session is complete once you see a "Congratulations" screen. Hawkeye Community College will receive an electronic acknowledgment of its completion.
