Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC)

Explore Leadership and Opportunities with ROTC

Freshman and Sophomore Military Science (ROTC) classes are available through a partnership between Hawkeye and the University of Northern Iowa (UNI). While most classes and labs are held on the UNI campus, sections with 20 or more Hawkeye students will be conducted on the Hawkeye campus.

These ROTC classes, which count as elective credits toward your degree at Hawkeye, are offered at no cost for books and materials. They introduce the fundamentals of military arts and sciences, focusing on leadership, integrity, ethics, and responsibility. Classes are taught by experienced Army officers with extensive leadership backgrounds.

The first two years of the ROTC Program, Basic Course, involve no military obligation and are open to all students.

The Four-Year Army ROTC Program

Administered by UNI's Department of Military Science, the Army ROTC Program typically spans four years. Completing the Basic Course qualifies students for the ROTC Advanced Course at UNI, which leads to commissioning as an Army 2nd Lieutenant upon graduation. Graduates can serve in the active Army, National Guard, or Army Reserve.

Scholarships

Students can also apply for two- and three-year scholarships covering full tuition, mandatory fees, $450 annually for books, and a $100 monthly stipend during the school year. Scholarships are awarded based on academic performance and require a military commitment.
