What to Do if You Don’t Get Accepted

Turning Rejection Into Opportunity

Not getting accepted to the college you wanted can be tough, but it’s not the end of the road. Many students face this setback and still find great opportunities elsewhere. It's important to stay positive, explore your options, and make a plan for your next steps. Here are some things you can do if you don’t get into your first-choice school.

Talk to Your Advisor

Set up a meeting with your Hawkeye advisor. Bring your original application, and ask them to review it with you. They can help you figure out what might need improvement and suggest your next steps.

Look for Other Schools

Some colleges have rolling admissions, meaning they accept students throughout the year, or they don’t have strict application deadlines. Check out those schools and see if any of them could be a good fit for you.

Visit Other Campuses

If you’re considering new schools, go visit them! Touring a campus can help you figure out if it feels like the right place for you.

Improve Your Application

As you apply to new schools, make sure you use the feedback from your advisor to improve your application. It’s a fresh start, and you can make it even better this time.

Update Your References

Let the people who wrote your recommendation letters know about your new plans. If needed, ask them to send updated letters to your new schools.

Reach Out to the School That Denied You

If you want to learn from the experience, contact the college that didn’t accept you and ask why. Don’t be defensive—think of it as a way to improve. You can also ask to be put on a waiting list or find out if you have a better chance if you reapply later.

Consider Transferring Later

If you really want to go to a specific school, you can always wait and try transferring after another semester or two.

Take More Classes at Hawkeye

You can also take more classes at Hawkeye to build up your credits before transferring. Just make sure you don’t earn more credits than your new school will accept.

Check with both the admissions and financial aid offices to be sure you're still eligible for financial aid.

Remember, not getting into your first-choice school isn’t the end of the road—it’s just a chance to explore other opportunities!
