Course Format Descriptions

The Right Course Format for You

At Hawkeye, we offer a variety of course formats to fit your learning style and schedule. Whether you prefer learning in a traditional classroom, online, or a mix of both, we have options to meet your needs.

Explore Your Options

Below, you’ll find a breakdown of face-to-face, online, and hybrid class options, along with the technology requirements for each.

background

In a face-to-face class, you'll attend in-person sessions on set days and times. Classes are on campus in a classroom or lab with your teacher and classmates.

While most of the learning happens on campus, some assignments, discussions, or tests may still be done online.

Online

In a fully online class, all your work is done online, and you never have to meet in person or at specific times. You’ll need to take part in online lessons regularly.

All your materials, like the syllabus, will be online.

Tests might be monitored using special online software.

Live/Zoom

In a Live/Zoom course, you have to join virtual classes through Zoom at specific days and times. You don’t need to come to campus for class.

Like with the fully online class, the syllabus and materials are all online, and tests can be given during class or through online monitoring software.

Technology Requirements

For both types of online classes, you'll need:

  • a computer
  • fast internet
  • a webcam
  • a microphone

Hybrid Live/Campus + Online

In this type of hybrid class, you need to attend in-person meetings on campus on certain days and times, but also take part in online activities that aren’t at a set time.

Hybrid Live/Campus + Live/Zoom

Here, you attend both in-person classes on campus and virtual meetings on Zoom, each on specific days and times.

Hybrid Live/Zoom + Online

In this version, all meetings are done on Zoom at set days and times, but you’ll also do online activities on your own time.

Course Materials and Tests

Course materials, including the syllabus, are all online.

Tests are taken either in class or through online monitoring software.

Technology Requirements

For all types of hybrid classes, you'll need:

  • a computer
  • fast internet
  • a webcam
  • a microphone

Notice to Out-of-State Students

SARA Participating InstitutionThinking about enrolling in a distance education course at Hawkeye but live outside of Iowa? Here’s some important information you should know!

Hawkeye Community College is part of an agreement between states that sets up similar rules for offering online courses. It makes it easier for students like you to take online classes from colleges in other states. This agreement is called the State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements, or SARA for short.

Since June 2016, Hawkeye has been a SARA school through the Midwestern Higher Education Council. This means we follow these national standards, so you can focus on your studies without worrying about the rules!
