Reverse Credit Transfer

Complete Your Hawkeye Degree

The reverse credit transfer option allows students to transfer credits from a 2-year and/or 4-year college or university back to Hawkeye Community College to complete their degree.

If you're transferring credits from Iowa State University, the University of Iowa, or the University of Northern Iowa to finish your Associate of Arts (AA) or Associate of Science (AS) degree at Hawkeye, check out the Transfer in Iowa Reverse Credit Transfer Program.

Here's what to do:

  • If you’ve already applied for admission and didn’t opt in, don’t worry! Contact your transfer university now and ask to enroll in the Reverse Credit Transfer Program.

Taking this step ensures your credits transfer smoothly to complete your degree!

To successfully complete your degree at Hawkeye through reverse credit transfer, you’ll need to meet these requirements:

  • Meet Hawkeye’s minimum on-campus credit residency requirements by doing one of the following:
    • Complete at least 30 credits at Hawkeye before transferring.
    • Complete 16 of your last 22 credits at Hawkeye. Not sure if you qualify? Connect with your academic advisor to check and request an updated degree audit.
  • Maintain a degree GPA of 2.00 or higher before transferring.
  • Earn a grade of C- or higher for those credits to transfer back to Hawkeye.

Meeting these requirements ensures your credits are eligible and helps you finish your degree smoothly!

If you’ve opted into the Transfer in Iowa Reverse Credit Transfer Program for Iowa Regent Universities:

  • Your transfer university will automatically send your transcript to Hawkeye at the end of the semester, free of charge, once you’ve earned 60 combined credits between Hawkeye and your transfer university.
  • Hawkeye will then send your updated transcript, showing your degree, to your transfer university. This process may take 6–8 weeks from the end of the term in which you completed the required reverse transfer coursework.

If you have not opted into the Transfer in Iowa Reverse Credit Transfer Program:

  1. Work with your Hawkeye academic advisor to confirm that the courses you take will transfer back and meet your remaining degree requirements.
  2. Complete the Intent to Reverse Credit Transfer Form [PDF] to apply your transfer credits toward your two-year degree at Hawkeye and ensure you’re on track to graduate.
  3. If you're on track to graduate:
    • Once your final grades are posted from your last semester, request an official transcript from your transfer university and send it to the Hawkeye Admissions Office.
    • Your official transcript must be received within one month of Hawkeye’s semester end date. Check the Academic Calendar for specific dates.
  4. After Hawkeye processes your degree, request an official transcript from Hawkeye to be sent to your transfer university. Your transcript will now reflect your completed degree!

Your diploma will be printed and mailed to the name and address currently on file at Hawkeye.

If your name or address has changed after transferring:

Student Account Hold Notification and Diploma Release

If there is a hold on your student account, Hawkeye cannot send you your diploma until the hold has been resolved.

If there is a hold on your student account, we will mail you a letter to the address on file to notify you of the hold.

Once all holds have been resolved, contact the Registrar's Office to request your diploma be mailed to you.

Hawkeye proudly celebrates its graduates once a year in May, honoring students who complete their programs during the fall, spring, or summer semesters of the current academic year.
