Transfer Credit Requirements

  • Grade of C- or higher required: Hawkeye requires a grade of C- or higher for transfer credit. When entering classes to see if they will transfer to Hawkeye, enter only courses you have earned a C- grade or higher.
  • Evaluation of transfer credit: Transferology is a great place to start to see if your classes will transfer Hawkeye, however, for an official transfer credit evaluation you must send official transcripts to Hawkeye's Admissions office. See the Evaluation and Acceptance of Transfer Credits section below for more information.

Evaluation and Acceptance of Transfer Credits

Send Your Official Transcript

To have your previously earned college credits evaluated for transfer credit at Hawkeye, we require an official transcript from each college or institution you have attended. Please send these directly to the Admissions office.

Transcripts are considered official only when sent directly from the issuing institution or from an approved, secure third-party agency, such as the National Student Clearinghouse. Hand-delivered transcripts, even in a sealed envelope, will not be accepted as official.

If your official transcripts were submitted since 2008, they should already be on file with the College. Contact the Admissions office if you have any questions regarding previously submitted transcripts or assessment scores.

Evaluating Your Transcript

Hawkeye will evaluate your credits according to the major or degree you choose. Only the courses required for that major or degree will be transferred, provided the transfer course meets the minimum grade requirement.

If it is determined that the courses you completed are similar in content to a required course in one of Hawkeye’s technical degrees, your transcript will be sent to the relevant academic department at Hawkeye for evaluation. The department will then decide whether or not to accept the credit for your major or degree.

The length of time to prepare a transfer evaluation varies. If your transfer credits are from a college located in another state or if your credits are not recent, it may take longer to evaluate your transcript.

Please allow up to four weeks from the time the official transcript arrives at Hawkeye's Admissions office for evaluation.

International diplomas and transcripts will be evaluated by the International Student Admissions team. See Foreign Diploma and Transcript Evaluation.

Your Transfer Summary in Self-Service will show the transfer credits that have been applied to your record. It also:

  • Provides information about each external course and the corresponding equivalent courses assigned.
  • Provides transfer credit totals for both the equivalent courses and the transfer courses.
  • Is viewable by both the student and advisors to see the list of previous universities.

From the Transfer Summary you can expand a particular university link to view the following details:

  • Transfer Course/Title: Courses transferred from the previous university.
  • Credits: Transfer credits from the previous university.
  • Grade: Grade acquired for the course in the previous university.
  • Completion Date: Generic course completion date that correlates with the semester in the previous university.
  • Equivalent Course/Subject/Course Level: Equivalent course/subject/course level at Hawkeye.
  • Credits: Equivalent transfer credits at Hawkeye.
  • Grade/Dept: NA
  • Academic Level: Academic level of the course at Hawkeye.
  • Restrict to Academic Programs: NA

Review your degree audit to see which credits were accepted and how they count towards your degree requirements. Visit Self-Service Student Planning and select Go to My Progress.

If a major or degree requirement has been fulfilled by transfer credit, the course requirement status will be marked with Transfer Equivalency, along with the equivalent course, title, and credits.

If a course transferred, but doesn't count towards your major or degree requirements, it will appear under Other Courses at the end of My Progress.

Please note that only grades earned at Hawkeye are included in your GPA at Hawkeye.

If you have questions about how your transfer courses apply to your degree, please consult with your academic advisor

Transfer credit evaluation between Fall 2011 and Spring 2022: If you previously had courses from another college with a grade of C- evaluated, please contact your academic advisor. These credits may now count towards your degree requirements. During that period, a grade of C or higher was required for credit transfer.

Accepted Transfer Credits

Courses from regionally accredited colleges and universities will be accepted as transfer credits if Hawkeye determines the course is transferable or technical.

Non-transferable credits include:

  • Courses considered developmental or remedial
  • Experiential credits

Note: Hawkeye does not accept credits from colleges or universities that are not regionally accredited.

Credit can be granted for a variety of exams, providing students with an opportunity to earn college credit for what they already know.

Credit is granted for the following exams:

To have your exam scores evaluated for credit: Send your official score reports to the Admissions office.

To see if credits by examination have been applied to your record: Visit Test Summary in Self-Service and select Other Tests. Test(s) that don't meet the minimum score won't be entered and will not show on the test summary page.

To see how the credits by examination apply to your degree(s)/major(s): Visit Student Planning in Self-Service and select Go to My Progress. If the course requirement is completed by credit by examination you'll see "Noncourse Equivalency" in the Status column directly under the course requirement(s).

Courses at a college or university with candidate status for accreditation by a regional association will be accepted as transfer credits in a similar manner as credits from regionally accredited institutions. Credits must be applicable to your major/degree.

Military transcripts will be evaluated for transfer based on the recommendations from the American Council on Education's Guide to the Evaluation of Educational Experiences in the Armed Services.

Military transcripts will be received electronically by our Admissions office. Request your official Military Transcripts

Credit may be granted for the following based on the American Council on Education’s Guide:

  • Vocational certificate for technical degrees only
  • Lower-division baccalaureate degree
  • Upper-division baccalaureate degree

For students in a technical degree, your transcripts may be routed to appropriate staff if military coursework is potentially applicable to the major/degree.

For students in a transfer degree, a maximum of 21 elective credits may be awarded based on the ACE recommendations.

Community College of the Air Force: Up to 16 career-technical credits will be granted.

Hawkeye will evaluate your credits based on the major/degree you choose. Courses needed for that major/degree will be transferred if the transfer course meets the minimum grade requirement.
