Fostering a Safe and Enjoyable Experience

In an effort to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for our members, you are required to adhere to the following Health Education and Services Center policies and possess a current Hawkeye ID. Those who do not abide by the rules of the Health Education and Services Center will not be allowed to use the facility in the future.

Please bring your own towel. Towels will not be provided.

Mission

The Athletics and Recreation department offers recreational and educational opportunities that teach wellness of mind, body, and spirit. Student activities and campus recreation enhance the collegiate experience; foster personal, professional, and leadership development; and provide opportunities for cultural and social interaction.

Disclaimer

Health Education and Services Center staff reserves the right, in its sole and absolute discretion, to revise these policies without notice at any time. It is your responsibility to understand and follow the most current policies.

All authorized users entering after 12 PM on a weekday or anytime on the weekend must present a Hawkeye ID or photo identification card at the front desk.

Activities conducted in the Health Education and Services Center such as physical fitness and exercise activities, weight training, and the like involve inherent risks, dangers, and hazards. Participation or observation of all Health Education and Services Center programs is strictly voluntary.

Participants are encouraged to have a physical examination prior to participating in any activity, particularly if they have any health problems or concerns due to injury, illness, age, or a history of heart disease or high blood pressure, respiratory problems, skeletal or muscular injuries or ailments, or are significantly above their recommended weight based on a standard weight chart. Participants are expected to maintain their own medical and health coverage.

Hawkeye is not responsible in any way for accidents or injuries.

All members should inspect and familiarize themselves with the Health Education and Services Center facility and equipment before participating in any activity.

If a member is uncertain or unfamiliar with any activity or equipment, he or she should contact a Health Education and Services Center staff member for orientation.

Violations of the Health Education and Services Center policies, Hawkeye Student Conduct policies, or the Employee Manual may lead to removal from the facility or loss of privileges and will be reported to the Dean of Students.

Members must adhere to the following policies in order to use the Health Education and Services Center

  • Health Education and Services Center Waiver and Release of Liability Form must be signed before using the facility.
  • Spirited participation is encouraged; however, please refrain from inappropriate behavior and the use of profanity, as determined by Health Education and Services Center staff.
  • Members may be billed for late, damaged or lost college equipment utilized by them. Also see the Equipment Checkout Policy.
  • Entry to and exit from the facility must be done at the front desk only. Other exits should be used for emergencies only.
  • Members attempting to help non-members illegally or improperly enter the facilities will have their membership suspended or revoked.
  • Health Education and Services Center events, credit classes, and club sports have priority scheduling over open gym hours.
  • The main floor and recreational areas are available on a first come, first served basis, as determined by Health Education and Services Center staff.
  • Animals are not permitted in facilities except trained service animals.
  • Only non-alcoholic beverages in closed, re-sealable plastic containers are allowed in activity areas. Food must be contained to the lounge area unless permitted otherwise.
  • Appropriate, clean, closed-toe, non-marking, athletic shoes are required in all activity areas. No street shoes allowed. Flip Flops and Crocs are not allowed. Vibram shoes are allowed on the track but not in the weight room.
  • Proper attire, including shirts and shoes, are required at all times.
  • Tobacco is prohibited.
  • Bicycles, skateboards, unicycles, and in-line skates are prohibited.
  • Hanging from basketball rims or nets is prohibited.
  • Using cameras, cell phones, or any other electronic devices in the men's and women's locker rooms and rest rooms is strictly prohibited.
  • Neither the Health Education and Services Center nor its staff is responsible for lost or stolen items.
  • All members may use day-use lockers, but contents and locks must be removed on a daily basis. Locks will be cut and lockers will be cleared at the end of each day, unless rented for the semester. Members should report missing items to the facility supervisor as soon as the items are noticed missing.
  • Spitting is prohibited unless done in spitting receptacles. Members found spitting may have their membership suspended or revoked.
  • All Health Education and Services Center members are expected to be responsible, courteous, and safety-conscious at all times. Any member who is found guilty of stealing or damaging property, is verbally or physically abusive toward another person at the Health Education and Services Center, or whose presence is determined by Health Education and Services Center administration to be detrimental to the best interests of the facility, may have his or her membership suspended or revoked.
  • All accidents and incidents occurring in the facility, no matter how minor, should be reported to Health Education and Services Center staff as soon as possible.

Recreational equipment is available for check out at the front desk. Members are eligible to use this service upon the presentation of their Hawkeye ID.

At that time, the member will be given the equipment and a Health Education and Services Center only card allowing them access to the locker room.

After the Health Education and Services Center card and equipment is returned to the front desk, the member's Hawkeye Card ID will be returned to them.

Equipment may be used inside or outside the Health Education and Services Center facility.

Late, Damaged, and Lost Equipment Fee

A replacement charge will be assessed for lost or damaged equipment. Failure to pay this fine will result in a charge assessed to the user’s Hawkeye account. If a sponsored adult fails to return equipment, the fee will be placed on the sponsoring Hawkeye employee's account.

Removal of equipment without consent of Health Education and Services Center staff from the facility or designated grounds is not permitted.

Minimum fine $50.

Hawkeye participates in the State of Iowa Offset Program operated by the Iowa Department of Administrative Service, commonly referred to as the "DAS Offset Program." Outstanding balances will be submitted to this Offset Program.

Guests wishing to utilize the Health Education and Services Center for recreational purposes must be 18-years of age or older, associated with a current Hawkeye student, faculty, or staff member; and are required to fill out the Health Education and Services Center Waiver and the Guest Pass Contract.

Limit of two guest passes issued per Hawkeye student, staff, or faculty.

Approved guests will receive a daily member ID for access to the locker rooms and will be granted access to the following Health Education and Services Center facilities:

  • Weight room
  • Group fitness room
  • Basketball court
  • Indoor track
  • Locker room

Guest passes may only be obtained for two consecutive weeks at a time.

Guest Pass Rates

1 day: $5
1 week: $20
2 weeks: $40

Payments can be made by cash, check, or card.

Guidelines for Trainers / Instructors

Personal training and group fitness classes on the Hawkeye premises is restricted to trainers and instructors hired by Hawkeye.

Any participant who is conducting or is suspected of conducting personal training or group fitness classes with members in the Health Education and Services Center facility and who is not a Health Education and Services Center employee will have membership privileges reviewed and/or revoked.

Guidelines for Trainees / Participants

All required forms must be completed, current, and on-file prior to each session/class. Forms may expire as indicated or as medical history or payment method changes.

Refund Policy

Once a group fitness class or personal training session or package is purchased, no refund will be given.

If you purchase a group fitness class or personal training and cannot finish the sessions due to health issues, you are eligible for a refund for unused sessions minus a $5 processing fee. You must provide documentation from your physician to receive this refund. This refund is based upon the approval from the Health Education and Services Center administration.

Expiration Policy

Personal training sessions expire three months from the date of purchase.

Cancellation Policy

You must notify your personal trainer at least two hours in advance of your scheduled session to cancel. You must also receive confirmation of cancellation from the trainer.

If you do not appear for a scheduled appointment or fail to give a two hour notice, you will be charged for the full session.

Please call if you are going to be more than five minutes late for a session. Personal trainers will only wait 15 minutes for late arrivals and your sessions will start from the time agreed upon.

In addition to the Building and General Use Policies, members utilizing the track will adhere to the following policies:

  • No food or beverages are allowed on the track. Only non-alcoholic beverages in closed, re-sealable, plastic containers are allowed on the area adjacent to the track. Food must be contained to the lounge area unless permitted otherwise.
  • Walkers use inside lane.
  • No more than two runners or walkers side by side.
  • Use caution when changing lanes.
  • PLEASE follow the flow of runners. Even days walk/run clockwise and odd days walk/run counter-clockwise.
  • No stretching on the track.
  • No spitting on the track, please use trash receptacles.
  • No spectators on the track.

Track Distance: 1 lap = 0.06 mile, 15 laps = 1 mile

In addition to the Building and General Use Policies, members utilizing the weight room must adhere to the following policies:

  • Members may be billed for late, damaged or lost college equipment utilized by them. Also see the Equipment Checkout Policy.
  • Weights and weight stacks may not be slammed or dropped.
  • Gym chalk is not permitted.
  • Use collars with all bars in free weight lifting stations.
  • Tape is not allowed on any equipment.
  • All open wounds must be completely covered while using equipment.
  • During peak hours, or while others are waiting, limit your workout on the cardio equipment to 30 minutes.
  • Use spotters when using free weights.
  • No snatches or overhead press.
  • Do not drop weights above knees.
  • Return equipment and rack weights when finished.
  • Wipe down equipment after use.
  • Pick up towels, water bottles, magazines, etc. when finished.
  • Use weight lifting belts as appropriate.
  • Notify staff immediately if you notice any broken, damaged, or unsafe equipment.

Membership Policies

Recreational use of the Health Education and Services Center facility is limited to approved members.

All persons wishing to utilize the Health Education and Services Center are required to sign a HESC Waiver and Release of Liability Form and possess and present a current Hawkeye ID or scan in using the finger scanner each time they use the facility.

Guests visiting the Health Education and Services Center for non-recreational purposes must sign in and out at the front desk and be accompanied by a member.

Verification of status may take up to 48 hours after applying to use the Health Education and Services Center.

Members will be charged $5 to replace a Hawkeye Card ID.

Members are defined as any patron using the Health Education and Services Center facility for recreational purposes.

Membership: Credit students, high school students enrolled in credit classes, and Hawkeye faculty and staff are eligible for membership.

Fee-based membership: Retirees, contracted employees, police academy students, sponsored adults, and guests are eligible for a fee-based membership.

  • Membership fees must be paid in full to activate the membership.
  • Fees are used to pay for equipment, maintenance, and facility updates.
  • Fee-based members will pay the same fees for group fitness classes and personal training sessions as Hawkeye employees.

Credit students are defined as students who are:

  1. Currently enrolled in at least one academic credit hour.
  2. Pay activity fees.
  3. In good standing as defined in the Hawkeye Student Handbook.

Use of the facility for recreational purposes begins on the first day of the month that the class begins and ends on the last day of the month that the student attended classes.

Students who attended classes the previous spring semester and are registered for fall semester classes may continue using the HESC facility throughout the summer.

High school students who are taking Hawkeye credit classes while also enrolled in high school can utilize the Health Education and Services Center for recreational purposes.

Concurrent enrollment students (your high school pays your tuition) must pay the student activity fees reflective of the number of credits they are enrolled in to be granted member status to the Health Education and Services Center.

Credits are confirmed through the High School Partnerships office.

Hawkeye faculty and staff have access to use the Health Education and Services Center as a member for recreational purposes.

Faculty are defined as full-time or adjunct instructors currently teaching applied science, applied arts, associate of arts, or associate of science credit courses.

Staff are full-time or part-time employees as defined in the Hawkeye Personnel Handbook.

Per the Employee Handbook, retirees must have achieved 10 consecutive years of full-time employment at Hawkeye.

Status to be determined and authorized by the Human Resources Department Sponsored Adult.

Membership fee: $10

Contracted employees are those that are working in the Print Shop or Mailroom, or FBG employees.

Membership fee:

  • 3 months: $30
  • 6 months: $50
  • 12 months: $75

Police Academy students currently enrolled in an academy session are eligible to use the Health Education and Services Center for recreational purposes.

Membership fee: $10

A qualified Hawkeye employee, retiree, or contracted employee can sponsor one adult.

The sponsored adult must be 18 years old or older and reside in the same household as the sponsor.

Membership fee:

  • Day Pass: $10
  • 3 months: $30
  • 6 months: $50
  • 12 months: $75

Sponsored Adult Verification Process

The sponsoring member and the sponsored adult are required to complete the verification process together.

  1. Student, Employee, or Retiree Verification: The sponsoring member must show their employee badge.

  2. Address verification:
    1. The sponsored adult must provide proof of address. Please provide one of the following documents to verify the sponsored adult's address:

      • Driver’s License
      • Passport
      • Piece of mail
        • Must be addressed to the sponsored adult
        • Must be postmarked within four weeks of the current date.
        • Must be official mail, i.e. bill.
        • Hand addressed, personal mail, or advertisements are not valid.
    2. HESC staff will use the college database to verify that the addresses match.

  3. Membership Fee:Full payment of the desired membership will be required before using the HESC. Cash or check only.
  4. Membership Policies: The sponsored adult will receive a copy of policies.
  5. HESC Waiver and Release of Liability form: The sponsored adult will sign the HESC Waiver and Release of Liability form.
  6. Membership ID card: Upon successful completion of all the above steps, the HESC staff will make the sponsored adult an ID card.

Note: If the sponsor no longer has active membership status, the sponsored adult's membership is automatically cancelled. The membership fee will not be refunded.

Guests, if accompanied by a student, faculty, or staff member, are allowed to use the Health Education and Services Center for recreational purposes.

Guests visiting the Health Education and Services Center with a member must sign the guest pass waiver and guest tracking form.

Guests may be granted a guest pass for a maximum of two weeks.

Guests must follow the guest pass policies.

Guest Pass Rates

  • Day Pass: $5
  • Week Pass: $20
  • Two Week Pass: $40

Continuing education non-credit students are not eligible to use the Health Education and Services Center for recreational purposes. These classes/programs include:

  • Workforce Education Certificate program classes
  • Apprenticeship program classes
  • Corporate and Business training
  • Continuing education classes
  • Adult Education and Literacy classes

Weather Policies

The Health Education and Services Center may unexpectedly close due to weather or emergency situations. Before visiting you are encouraged to check for the current status of college closing, class cancellations, delayed start, or early dismissal information.

We encourage you to check more than one source of information for possible changes in announcements. Information provided to radio and television media may not be current as their ability to update information is limited. You may want to check a second source as well.
