Your Guide to Campus Safety and Emergencies

At Hawkeye Community College, your safety is our top priority. We encourage you to review these resources so you can stay informed, prepared, and respond quickly and appropriately in the event of an emergency.

When assisting someone in a life-threatening situation, such as serious injury, heavy bleeding, or difficulty breathing:

  • Stay calm and assess the scene for safety.
  • Offer first aid within your capabilities.
  • Do not move the person if you suspect a neck or back injury.
  • Follow universal precautions and treat body fluids as potentially infectious.

Once emergency services have been contacted, be sure to notify Public Safety at 319-296-4234 for additional assistance.

If you observe any of the following situations, contact Public Safety at 319-296-4234:

  • someone under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol
  • violence or criminal activity on campus
  • potential dangers or gross misconduct
  • suspicious person, package, letter, or object
  • any immediate concerns during evenings or weekends

Additionally, they can help with bomb threats and chemical spills.

Public Safety Services

The Student Health Clinic offers assistance with various medical concerns, including counseling and support for suicidal or homicidal thoughts, domestic abuse, trauma, and the loss of a loved one.

If 911 has been called, medical staff will assist until paramedics arrive.

Resources for Faculty and Staff

The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a free and confidential service available to all Hawkeye Community College employees and their family members. Employee and Family Resources is the College’s Employee Assistance Program provider. An Employee and Family Resources counselor is available 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. All voluntary involvement is strictly confidential. Initial evaluation and referral services are offered at no cost.

If You See Something, Say Something

If you see something that seems suspicious or out of place, it’s important to speak up—for all our safety.

Hawkeye Community College encourages everyone to report any concerns related to safety, potential threats, or suspicious activity. Doing so can help maintain a secure environment for everyone on campus.

You can report anything unusual to campus officials or public safety authorities immediately.

Recognizing and Reporting Early Warning Signs of Violence

Stay alert for early signs of troubling behavior, as individuals who may later act violently often show warning signs.

If you notice suspicious behavior, report it to the appropriate campus office.

If you believe someone poses an immediate threat, contact Public Safety at 319-296-4234 right away.

Being proactive can help prevent potential harm and ensure a safer environment for everyone on campus.
